Historical Swordmanship: Katana, Rapier, Two-Handed Sword
Students are introduced to historical swordsmanship based on Medieval and Renaissance techniques. The swordfighting disciplines that will be explored in this class are the Japanese katana (a unique, single-edged sword), the rapier (the traditional dueling weapon), and the two-handed sword (the knightly European mediaval weapon). Swords used in class are the shinai (made of bamboo) and the foil (modern version of the rapier).

  Intermediate Historical Courses

Rapier (ages 14 - Adult)
This class focuses on the many forms of civilian combat and weaponry.  Designed to train participants in the strict disciplines of the French, Italian and Spanish schools, students are introduced to the use of the rapier and small-sword.  Multiple 2-weapon styles will also be presented, including rapier with dagger, rapier with cloak, rapier with shield/buckler and case of rapier.  Marked by thrusts rather than cuts, these styles are similar to sport fencing, but are not limited to modern linear footwork.  Sparring and scored bouts will take place in a one on one format.

Weapons used in this class include a rapier and flexible dagger.

  Two-Handed Sword (ages 14 - Adult)
Unlike dueling, which focuses on the skills of two combatants, group fighting - known as melee - makes use of formations and tactics. Overall strategy of battle will be discussed. Famous battles will be analyzed and practiced. Teams of four or more will spar utilizing actions associated with the broadsword, shield, two-handed sword, mace / ax, and pole-arms. Unarmed forms such as grappling and breaking techniques will also be explored.

Shields and shinai swords will be used.

  Youth Historical (Ages 9 -13yrs)
Students explore a variety of historical sword styles from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Weapons studied include the rapier and dagger of the 16th and 17th centuries, the two-handed sword, and the sword and shield of the 14th century. the focus of the class changes periodically and either the rapier and dagger are used or the shinai and shield.

Intermediate Katana (ages 14 - Adult)
Based on the rather unique single-edged long sword, this class explores the Easternsystem of combat through four areas: the classical duel, group tactics, use of pole arms, and the dynamics of Oriental in-fighting. Techniques such as knife fighting and hand-tohand versus katana and pole arms will also be explored.
