Our Academy |
Founded in 1991 by Russian Fencing Master Alexandre Ryjik, the Virginia Academy of Fencing (VAF) has introduced fencing to thousands of adults and children in the Washington metropolitan area. In 1997, we moved to our present 6,200 sq. ft. location, one of the largest in the US dedicated solely to fencing.
We teach all aspects of fencing: the competitive sport, its historical analysis and theatrical presentation. (see Programs) VAF is a place where experienced fencers can greatly improve their skills and where those who are just starting learn fencing in a safe, friendly and fun environment. (see Lessons) Fencers of all ages may choose to fence for fun and recreation or to train for competitions where they can earn national rankings. We have classes to support either of these choices. (click here for Intermediate and Advanced Class Description If you enjoy competition, you can choose to train to participate in official state and national tournaments sponsored by the United States Fencing Association (USFA), the national governing organization. As a USFA member, our academy is an official site for USFA events. Providing high quality fencing instruction is only part of our philosophy. Respect, honor, and good sportsmanship are an integral part of our disciplined approach to achieving athletic and personal growth. Workshops and Master Classes add to the fencing experience. We hold practice competitions that prepare fencers for participation in state and national events. Sponsored social events give fencers' families a chance to join in the VAF team spirit. (see Schedule) Intermediate and advanced members are encouraged to free fence, that is, practice with other students outside of regular classes. (click here for Intermediate Level Description ) |
